Well I´ve played the game for hours now and I gotta say its huge. For reference, the distance between Ardea (the starting city) to Montera (see the map, it is online) is longer to walk then from the harbour in Khorinis to Onars farm. And as you all can see thats just a tiny little bit of the entire Myrtana land, not to mention the rest of the Gothic 3 world (Nordmar and Varant). You wanted size? Well you got it.
I did apply the patch, but it didn´t help things out for me. Seems to be a game balance and other bugs fix. The massive amount of graphical errors is still present, the constant day/night switches and popping textures/shadows is still there and I could almost swear its slower/lags more now then before!
Looks like its gonna be playable for the common non-Gothic fan in about a months time I reckon. You gotta be a trua fanatic (like me) to play it now. Such a great game, and Jowood f***ed it up by releasing it now.

Just got the game today. Weee.
My first impression [after nearly 4 hours of gaming].
Confusing to begin with.
Due to spoiler alert i wont go deep on this and just say that for new people joining gothic, it can all seem abit confusing.
NPCs.
The NPCs dosnt feel that much "alive" as what was said in the dev trailers/blog (not where i am in the game anyway). NPCs do have a few duties here and there like sawing woods or a smith forgeing a sword ect. But beside that i dont see much life in them, i dont hear them chatting to each other when they stand face to face pretending to be talking ect. It all seem very "unreal", if you get my drift. They do drink and eat like in previous gothic games. Thats my thought pn how life look for the NPCs. It could have been alittle better on that part, imho.
Melee Combat.
Melee combat. Phew thats a tuff one, they werent kidding when they said it was hard to master it. I got slaughtered so many times to a couple of agressive boars that i almost went awire on my keyboard (no its aint fun after your 10th load^_o). Its a very difficult trade to master when its so diffrent from how other games handle melee, and it is going to take time to adjust to it.
Magic. No comments, i have no idea how you use magic. Yet....
Beside what iv said above, it really is a beautifull game. You got lovely graphic if your system can handle it. Good voice acting, great music theme and alot of quests to do. So a good deal of hours there. The combat is fun to once you figure it out, which may take a few tries. And what appears to be a big world, so alot of exploreing to do aswell. And bugs, havnt seen any tbh, but bugs are there to patched.
Dont go thinking i have just given you and opinion of the entire game. This is just my first impression of how fare iv gotten so fare. And how fare iv gotten is two small villages iv visited. I dont know how the bigger cities have NPCs acting, or how they even look. But ill find out soon enough.
My final thoughts on it. I recommend getting it, it has alot of good hours in it.

I know you can disable/remove the hotbar by pressing the ctrl key. The compass i do not know.

I waited for this game for a while but was sorry to see some of the negative posts about its performance my comp is elderly AMD XP 2.1 1024G ram Nvid FX5700LE. Anyway purchased game locally today but have not yet installed the patch. Packaging was standard DVD case with slim manual as is the norm these days. Installation took about 10 minutes and went smoothly. I set the options to low detail and res to 1024X768. And waited with bated breath for game to load and......
It did, no problems at all intro played smoothly without any stuttering etc, finally arrived in game, I will give no spoilers here, I must say that what i saw on screen at the moment of entry into the game exceeded what i had expected given my computer specs. I admit the movement was not as fluid as it could be, but given that there were as many as eight npcs plus myself on screen at once the performance was more than i had hoped for.
The look and feel of the game is pure Gothicness for those who have played the prequels will know what i mean here. The speech i liked a lot - i felt with oblivion most of the speech acting was really bad, but here the voices seemed real and fitted the persona of the individuals, I actually wanted to hear what they had to say. I found no problems with the pickup animation at all, it works - thats it. The world is gritty, detailed and beautiful, those with high end graphics cards are in for a treat here.
It was clear from the outset that the music score was going to be good (both ways). The music is moving and fits whats happening - i usually play with little or no music in games, but found no great desire here to turn it off as is my usual. The combat seems to work just fine, animation speed seems about right to me - ranged weapons work well and and its nice that its not possible to wield every weapon from the outset - it gives yet another goal to work for.
I must say that from the outset i actually felt drawn in by the story and WANTED to pursue it in a way that i never did at the start of Ob, i cannot explain why this is - its just somehow seems to reach you on a different level, wether this is everyones experience remains to be seem, but for me it worked anyway. So overall my first 30 mins or so in the Gothic 3 world was a good experience - considering the lowly specs being used here. Hopefully the rest of my journey will be as rewarding also.

[May contain slight spoilers about the beginning of the game, nothing that could spoil anyone's experience though I'm sure]
I just bought the game earlier today and I've pretty much decided to put it on the shelf until I buy a new system early next year.
I'm on a 3 GHz P4 with 1 Gb RAM and a Radeon X1600 Pro - not a fast computer by any means these days, but able to squeeze more or less acceptable framerates out of even Oblivion in the wilderness with most settings slightly below medium (and running at 1440x900, the native resolution of my monitor).
I figured I would start out modestly with Gothic 3 at medium settings (and the resolution a notch lower, 1280x800), and was greeted with something resembling a slideshow (after waiting nearly two minutes for the loading bar to fill up and the intro movie to begin, subsequent loading times where terribly long as well) - 8-12 fps according to Fraps.
Now granted, there are several NPCs in this scene and it's in a small village with plenty of objects around, so I tried the settings at the lowest possible, and got an incredible ~20 fps.
After the intial short battle I was able to move around the village freely. I cranked the settings back up to around medium (fiddled around with custom settings a bit) and upped the resolution to 1440x900.
Framerates around 18-25, but even in the high end of that range it didn't seem quite smooth in the village but rather so jerky that my easily triggered motion sickness actually kicked in slightly, something I don't experience in eg. Oblivion when the framerate drops into the teens.
Moving out into the landscape I got a much better 30something, but that was with low vegatation and horrible landscape and object popups (same deal with objects in the village at medium settings, sometimes I damn near needed to stand right in front of a table before the plates and food sitting on it appeared), and the game at those settings pretty much looked like something that was made five or six years ago.
If I recall correctly Gothic 2 actually looked significantly better than what I saw in this admittedly very brief period of time in Gothic 3, and that was on much older hardware.
Sorry for this rant, but I was looking forward to playing this game and seeing how remarkable something like Oblivion could look on even my dated hardware, I was expecting something a whole lot better than what it appears I can get from Gothic 3 on my system - which pretty much matches the recommended requirements spot on, and hasn't showed any signs of underperforming or being underoptimized in other games I've played recently.
Well, I might give it a second try later today, but I can't say this first impression left me feeling particularly inspired to load it up again, even if there could very well be a really great game waiting in there.
Playability and decent graphics (relative to what you should be able to expect) are two very important factors if I am to enjoy a game.

My PC is a bit old - AMD 2.1, Nvid 5700LE and 1GB of Ram. So it was with excitment mixed with a dose of apprehension that I slipped the disc into the tray and watched the screen, the install was smooth and took about 10 minutes to complete... now the big one, was the game going to run y/n?
Hooray, after a rather long black screen pause, started the credits, then on into the intro, suprisingly the intro played very well, no stuttering locking, wow so far so good! Then the game presented me with a menu with game options, I checked the default settings: video default for my pc was 1024X768 85hz at low detail. I left it at that for now and started a new game!
To my utter suprise the game started with no problems and even looked good. Without giving anything away about what was going on the screen well... I just stood watching and enjoying the sights and sounds. I began to feel drawn into the game world from the get go, I knew what was going on and wanted to be part of it...excellent!
I decided to explore the local area and on entering a building my attention was taken by movement outside. How did I see things outside when I was in a building? Yay I was looking through a window and could see what was going on outside, it felt so right, so much better than having inside and outside cells! Amazing how little things make a difference!
Checking a chest I noticed the open and pickup animations were fine and it was easy to drop items into the chest as well, (I made a note to come back later and see if they are still there) lots of stuff around to check out.
I climbed to the top of a lookout tower and had a look around, the environment is very gothicesque, gritty and dare I say wartorn, the musical score in the background was excelling in mood and pace. I went back down to talk to some of the npcs to check the voice acting, no complaints here either, each character seemed to have the right type of voice (Ob players will know what I mean here lol). I found myself actually wanting to engage them in conversation not just wanting to get info and go, almost wanting more conversation options than were available.
I went outside the settlement to try a bit of combat, it was here I noticed one or two graphic glitches, and possibly the movement animations of the critters could be improved. Trying ranged combat, I liked it, the string/shot speed on the bow is fast so you can get a few shots off before the nasties get to you making ranged weapons well usefull. I didn't notice any particular problems with the combat animation of the hero, given low specs of my computer I didn't expect perfection, but hey I was able to play the game and most important I really enjoyed it!
Having picked up a few quests I now proceeded on my way to soak up a bit more of the game.
I have played pretty well every CRPG there is and from my short time spent in G3, it really felt this game is a worthy addition to any collection. The atmosphere is excellent and there is a believability about whats going on, asking you from the outset questions about how your character is going to interact with the world around. Myrtana is a dangerous place, and it feels like it. Im sure there are some bugs in the game, but its a big enterprise and hopefully with a few patches and better PCs the best is yet to come.
My score based on, a short, 1-2 hours of play:
Atmosphere - 10/10
Graphical/Environment - 9/10 (odd glitches and I did get the white screen)
Sound - 9/10 (maybe needs a few more like birds/wind etc)
Music - 10/10
Interface - 9/10 (well we all have our old favorites)
Manual - 6/10 (more info on the game would be nice)

Have it, too - playing for 4 hours so far -
stable release
heads of npcs look sometimes a bit too small in this big armor.
nice (and faster than expect) grafics on my older system:
resolution 1280x1024
2GB Ram PC 3200
AMD XP 2600 - overclocked from original 2083 to 2200 GHz
ATI x850 PRO AGP (shader model 2)
driver: catalyst 6.9
High detail settings - except:
shadows off
and vegetation quality low

I recieved my special edition one day early(many people in Scandinavia did I think), so I've played for some time now, here are the results:
- As has been pointed out by many, it has a bit of a "plastic look" like Oblivion. Also, unless you play on high details certain things are just plain ugly.
- The quest log is fairly bad imho, it only contains quotes from anyone talking about the quests, no additional info.
- The combat system is good, most of you should get the hang of it fairly soon.
It's all in all definetly a better game than Oblivion, but coming from me that doesn't say a lot, hehe. I like my experience so far, but I have one question about the english version: WHY, OH WHY did they change the english voices on all main characters? It was bad enough when they changed Diego from G1 to G2, but now every voice has been changed, even the nameless hero. Diego, Gorn, Milten, Lester, they all sound weird now, sure I'll get used to it, but still.. they feel like average NPCs now, not who they were back in the other games.
Other than that I have no complaints so far, and I'm enjoying the game.
